Seeing the Person, Strengthening the System: Mental Health Awareness in Action

Awareness matters most when it leads to meaningful action toward positive change. This year’s Mental Health Awareness Month message is “See the person. Support the journey.” Within this framework, seeing the person comes first, and how we show up in support becomes clearer. In practice, this approach also requires us to look more closely at the systems supporting that journey—and reinforce their transformation as well.

Across rural communities, this transformation is already underway. We’ve partnered with communities strengthening access through integrated, person-centered models such as Federally Qualified Health Centers and Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics, as well as through behavioral health integration in primary care. In many areas, Critical Access Hospitals and school-based supports are becoming essential entry points—helping identify needs earlier and connect individuals and families to care. These efforts reflect a broader shift from fragmented services to more coordinated, community-based systems that better align with how people seek support.

These gains are not only the result of program design—they reflect the strength of communities and the people who show up every day to make these systems work. In rural areas especially, progress is often driven by individuals and small teams who navigate limited resources with creativity, persistence, and deep connections to the communities they serve. From clinicians and care coordinators to peer professionals, educators, and community partners, these are the people translating models into meaningful support—ensuring that care is not only available, but truly reachable, relevant, and responsive.

These efforts also point to a clear opportunity: not just to expand services, but to strengthen how they connect and function together. Many of the building blocks are already in place—integrated care models, community-based supports, and a growing behavioral health workforce. The next step is ensuring these elements are aligned, accessible, and responsive to the people they are designed to serve.

Just as important is how individuals and families experience these systems. Seeing the person means more than recognizing need—it means ensuring that care is informed by the perspectives of those directly impacted. This includes engaging individuals and families as partners in shaping support and calling upon peer professionals with similar experiences, whose insight strengthens how services are delivered and sustained. When people are included not only as recipients of care but as contributors to its design and delivery, services become more responsive, more trusted, and more effective over time.

Over the past four decades, JBS has worked alongside communities and witnessed behavioral health systems of care evolve in meaningful ways—becoming more responsive to the needs of individuals and more attuned to the realities communities are navigating. In rural areas especially, that progress has taken shape through practical, community-driven solutions that build on local strengths while addressing persistent challenges. This year’s Mental Health Awareness Month reminds us that seeing the person is where the work begins. Strengthening the systems around them is how that work continues—through steady progress, shared responsibility, and a commitment to improving the lives of real people every day, wherever they live, learn, work, and connect.
