Preventing children's exposure to violence
More than 3 in 5 children are exposed to violence each year.
Every child reacts differently to exposure to violence. Symptoms range from anxiety and depression to sleeplessness and physical and emotional difficulties. Children exposed to violence are more likely to have trouble in school, abuse drugs and alcohol, and engage in criminal activity.
Since 2000, JBS has assisted the U.S. Department of Justice with its Safe Start Initiative, helping providers create and test evidence-based programs that prevent and treat children’s exposure to violence. Our technical assistance has helped grantees conduct research while serving children and their families.
The Safe Start Center builds awareness of children’s exposure to violence and engagement in the solutions. For the center, we created a Web site, award-winning awareness campaigns, issue briefs, and toolkits that help professionals address this issue and enable communities and families to take steps to end childhood exposure to violence.
