Helping Our Most Vulnerable Populations Impacted by the Opioid Crisis: Pregnant Women, Their Infants, and Those Receiving Child Welfare Services
JBS Experts to be Featured at National Rx Drug Abuse & Heroin Summit
Two of JBS’s in-house behavioral health experts will present evidence-based methods for helping opioid-dependent pregnant women, their infants, and those receiving child welfare services via a conference session on Tuesday, April 3 at the 2018 National Rx Drug Abuse & Heroin Summit in Atlanta.
Jennifer Kasten, Clinical TA Project Director, and Pamela Baston, Technical Expert Lead, will present the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s newly published “Clinical Guidance for Treating Pregnant and Parenting Women with Opioid Use Disorder and Their Infants.” They also will demonstrate a model of intervention with child welfare and court staff to mitigate escalation.
For their session, Dr. Kasten and Ms. Baston draw upon JBS’s 30 years of experience supporting opioid policy and programs around the United States for state and federal clients. In particular, the session will cover a new and innovative training and workforce development initiative Ms. Baston developed for the state of Florida to better equip child welfare and judicial staff serving a rapidly increasing number of families dealing with the effects of opioid misuse.
“The opioid epidemic is a very serious crisis that is taking the child welfare system by storm — it’s like a tsunami,” Ms. Baston said. “It’s overwhelming the judicial system, it’s overwhelming the child welfare caseloads, and it’s overwhelming the foster care system. My goal is to help staff working in these systems have a better understanding of the complexity of opioid addiction so that they can help parents and children without oversimplifying the solutions.”
JBS is a Gold Sponsor of the summit, which is expected to draw more than 2,500 of the nation’s top professionals from local, state, and federal agencies, business, academia, treatment providers, and allied communities impacted by prescription drug abuse and heroin use. Featured speakers include former President Bill Clinton; Dr. Jerome M. Adams, U.S. Surgeon General; Dr. Francis S. Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health; Dr. Scott Gottlieb, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner; Dr. Nora D. Volkow, Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse; and many others.
Dr. Kasten and Ms. Baston will join other substance abuse experts and leadership from JBS’s North Bethesda headquarters and Atlanta office in exhibit booth 604 at the summit to share JBS’s experiences from working around the country to address myriad facets of the opioid epidemic.
“Our years of work in every U.S. state and territory have shown us how critical integrated solutions are to addressing substance use disorders and their effects on families,” Dr. Kasten said. “We’re looking forward to sharing our experience and hearing what others are doing to respond to the opioid epidemic.”
