Several media reports, accounts from service providers, and evidence from some states are pointing to an increase in the rate of opioid overdose since the COVID-19 pandemic reached the United States. Contributing factors to this escalation include disrupted access to consistent supply, social isolation, and the reluctance of bystanders and first responders to attempt resuscitation with people who overdose due to concerns about infection transmission.
