Senior Science Writer (KAP)

North Bethesda health and human services consulting firm seeks a senior-level science writer to develop publications on topics related to substance use treatment.  The ideal senior science writer will have extensive experience developing health-related content for both specialist and general audiences in a variety of print and digital formats. An ability to translate highly technical material into concise, engaging, and actionable content is a must. Specific experience writing content related to the treatment and prevention of addiction and mental illness is strongly preferred.


  • Conceive, research, write and update evidence-based content for products such as toolkits, manuals, and fact sheets. Audiences include treatment providers, program administrators, other health professionals, and patients, families, and other interested consumers. ¬†
  • Contribute to the full range of product development activities, including:
    • Conceptualizing product formats.
    • Developing concept clearance documentation.
    • Developing substantive content outlines.
    • Conducting literature reviews.
    • Writing new content.
    • Updating existing content to conform with changes such as research advances, guidance and recommendations, and legislative and regulatory changes.
    • Working with in-house and consulting subject matter experts.
    • Preparing products for various stages of internal and external review, including field review and federal agency review.
  • Assist with proposal development and support for other corporate projects as needed.


Education: Master’s degree or higher in psychology/social work. Other science- and communications-related degrees will be considered.

Language: English fluency (oral and written)


  • 10 years of experience writing science and evidence-based content, preferably for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services or other federal agencies or contracting organizations involved in the health and human services field.
  • Strong history of translating highly technical findings into concise, engaging, and actionable content that is written for specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  • Experience writing and editing according to plain-language principles.
  • Experience adhering to in-house and professional style manuals (e.g., APA, GPO, Chicago).


  • Knowledge of substance use treatment and mental health fields.
  • Proven ability to identify, review, and critique topic-specific research literature; grade quality of evidence and strength of recommendations; and synthesize independently, with minimal guidance from content experts.


  • Excellent writing skills as applied to scientific and health-related content.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects at once while maintaining attention to detail; strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral communication skills.
  • Collaborative skills‚ÄĒcan engage with a team of talented in-house staff and external consultants in the development of consensus-based publications.

Software Proficiency:

  • High degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience using MS Word styles in document development.

Location: North Bethesda


Education: PhD in clinical psychology or health-related field.  

Language: English fluency (oral and written)
