Multi-Language Initiative (MLI)

Client: Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT)

MLI was created through CSAT’s Knowledge Application Program as a way to provide information for substance abuse treatment providers and clients whose first language is not English. MLI addresses the unfulfilled needs for treatment products among members of non-English-speaking groups or those with limited English-language abilities.

Hispanic Response to Census Forms and Procedures

Client: U.S. Department of Commerce, Census Bureau

Researchers from the JBS Aguirre Division addressed how Hispanics of different national origins respond to questions in the 1990 Spanish-language Census long form. Recommendations were made to improve the Spanish-language form. The data provided information on cultural contexts of census concepts, for example, the conflation for Hispanics of the concepts race, ethnicity, and national origin.

The report outlines the Indian Health Service and SAMHSA efforts to forge a stronger working relationship to improve behavioral health services for American Indian and Alaska Native populations.

This publication, in “fotonovela” format (using photographs with captions), helps readers recognize the dangers people face when they use alcohol to alleviate their problems and the devastating consequences that can result at the personal, family, and community levels.
