JBS Safety Reporting Portal Provides Data for FDA Annual Report
June 1, 2012 (North Bethesda, MD). Last month, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released the Reportable Food Registry (RFR) Annual Report, which measures the agency’s success in receiving early warnings on problems with food and feed across the United States.
The report is a synopsis of food safety reports largely captured through the Food and Safety Reporting Portal developed by JBS under a contract with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and launched in May 2010. Through the portal, JBS helps FDA and NIH quickly and efficiently identify lapses in product safety to prevent widespread problems.
“With the release of the Safety Reporting Portal, any government agency can electronically collect adverse event reports from concerned citizens or any responsible party and analyze the collected data to take the necessary actions to protect the public,” said Vice President of Information Technology Development and Operations Latif Khalil. “The Safety Reporting Portal provides a unified Federal Adverse Event reporting system where a single report submission can be customized and routed to multiple regulatory authorities.”
The online portal currently supports mandatory and voluntary adverse event and safety reports for a variety of pre- and post-market products including human and pet foods, animal drugs, and clinical trials.
This is the second RFR Annual Report and covers the period from September 8, 2010, to September 7, 2011. The first RFR Annual Report presented FDA’s experience with the registry from the opening of the Reportable Food electronic portal on September 8, 2009, until September 7, 2010.
The RFR covers all human and animal food/feed (including pet food) regulated by FDA except infant formula and dietary supplements, for which FDA has other mandatory reporting systems.
